A starting point

When we are born, we know nothing. That's it, as simple as that. We have zero knowledge of everything. So if we know nothing, we have to have a starting point to star something. Walking, talking, studying, living.

When you think back to when you were little and started speaking that would be an important starting point. People around you taught you your first language. But, do you remember what was the starting point for your second language? What made you say "oh, this seems interesting, I want to know more about this"?

For me, the thing that made me want to learn English (which in my case, my second language) was music, especially Taylor Swift's music (yes I'm one of those fangirls who know English because of her, sorry not sorry). I started learning English at school when I was 4 years old and I was good at it and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't until I was 9 years old, when I discovered her music, that I said "this is more interesting that I thought, I want to know more about it so I can understand everything that she says in her songs". So I continued with my English classes at school and the academy that I went to, but I started to "work" on my own: I would search her lyrics and translate them (what was really interesting but also a bit complicated for a 9-year-old). I also did that with other singers that I liked, like One Direction (again, I'm a fangirl), Coldplay or Robbie Williams.

Just in case you dear readers don't know her (get out of the cave you're living in, please) let me educate you in who Taylor Swift is, aka the music industry:

I learnt a lot during my classes but I seriously think that my interest in music at such a young age and my desire to know more about it made it really easy for me to get more into English and find it easier to understand and communicate in English. This was my case for my starting point in English, who knows which one will be my next starting point.
